The International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA) has announced the appointment of Blanca Castro as its new executive director. With over 16 years of experience in the coffee sector, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her new role.

Blanca’s history with IWCA began as a dedicated volunteer where she actively supported IWCA Global projects in Central America. In 2016, Blanca took over the role of chapter relations manager where she has successfully facilitated programmes and projects in support of the growth and success of the IWCA Chapter Network, representing 33 countries.

IWCA board president, Sharon Riechers, is excited about this new chapter saying “Blanca’s impressive background, experience, and deep commitment to the mission of the organisation will bring a fresh perspective and energy to programmes, partnerships, and overall impact of IWCA. With her leadership, IWCA is poised to further empower women in the coffee industry and drive positive change on a global scale.”

Blanca’s professional experience and dedication to promoting gender equality within the coffee industry make her an excellent fit for the role of executive director. Fluent in English, French, German, and Spanish, she is connected to a diverse professional network and has extensive experience in public relations, administration, and communications.

In a statement, Blanca expressed her enthusiasm for the new role, saying, “The inspiration I’ve found through groups of women willing to join IWCA got me since day one. It showed a clear need to gather, belong, and support, not only in a particular country or region but globally. IWCA, although seemingly small, has the vision and power to bring them all together and provide the necessary support. Women in the coffee industry deserve the changes that will enable them to achieve recognition and accountability. Building a team has been a nourishing ride for IWCA, and I truly believe that the collaboration of so many volunteers, following the original vision of the five remarkable women in coffee, is the foundation of the shared success of our great working team. I am incredibly excited for what lies ahead and for the continued growth and success of IWCA.”

Blanca Castro’s appointment as the new executive director marks an exciting new chapter for the International Women’s Coffee Alliance. Her multifaceted skills will enable her to identify the needs of various stakeholders in the coffee market and find innovative solutions to industry challenges.

The Cup of Excellence (COE) and the Alliance For Coffee Excellence (ACE) announce that Erwin Mierisch will take over the helm of both organisations as their executive director beginning 14 August 2023.

Erwin stood out among dozens of candidates and underwent vigorous screenings over a 3-month period. His vast knowledge of the global coffee industry, having been a coffee buyer, roaster, producer and exporter is a perfect match for a leadership position that demands understanding and versatility.

“As a coffee producer I have seen first-hand the benefits that COE and ACE have brought to the countries and to the farmers. My goal is to expand those benefits but also to make certain that companies are successful with their support,” explained Erwin. “I am proud to be the new executive director and will be reaching out to all of our country partners, supporters and members to find new and innovative ways to increase our vast reach, our mission and our valuable partnerships,” he continued. “There is no other programme that does as much as COE for unique coffees.”

Erwin’s rich history with Cup of Excellence began in 2002 with onboarding the first Nicaragua Cup of Excellence. Since then, he has been its operations manager, a skilled head judge, a trainer, and a winning Cup of Excellence farmer. He was also involved and helped coordinate the Los Favoritos Private Collection Auction.

Tim Taylor, chairperson of The Alliance for Coffee Excellence explained that, “Erwin has been a firm believer and staunch supporter since the early days. He wears the passion for its mission on his sleeve and is devoted to its success. I’m eager to see where he leads the two organisations.”

Noelia Villalobos, chairperson of The Cup of Excellence organisation also indicated that, “With first-hand experience and skill in all aspects of Cup of Excellence and with an empathy for coffee producers, the programme will be in good hands. We are grateful that he is willing to invest his long coffee history and expertise in developing an exciting future.”

The Cup of Excellence is a 501c3 non-profit organisation that owns and manages an annual multi-level competition in coffee producing countries. Since 1999 it has discovered remarkable coffees, micro regions no one knew existed and brought international fame to individual farmers. It has single handedly advanced hand-crafted single farm specialty coffees and assured transparency back to the farmers that produce these rare coffees. Its educational programmes, focusing on the sensory aspects of top-quality coffees, have been taught worldwide. Over its 23-year history it has held competitions in 15 coffee producing nations.

The British Coffee Association (BCA) has announced the appointment of Dr Krisztina Szalai from Caravela Coffee as the Association’s new Chair.

Krisztina has extensive experience within the coffee supply chain, ranging from her work in the buying and sustainability teams at Taylors of Harrogate, to her current role as Head of Sales at Caravela Coffee – a specialty green coffee importer / exporter specialising in sourcing high quality lots from smallholder producers in Latin America.

Utilising these experiences will be key during her term as Chair, supporting the UK coffee industry at a critical time as cost-of-living challenges, inflationary pressures, and a changing regulatory environment remain key challenges for many businesses, and as the UK continues to develop its approach to international trade, tariffs, and labour movement post-Brexit.

Research published by the BCA shows that the UK has a flourishing coffee industry – the nation drinks approximately 98 million cups of coffee every day, with the industry creating over 210,000 UK jobs. It is the role of the BCA to represent, promote, and support all aspects of the UK coffee trade.

Dr Krisztina Szalai, Chair of the British Coffee Association, said: “I am truly delighted to have been elected to serve as the BCA’s Chair at such an exciting time for the coffee industry.

“The BCA plays a vital role in supporting and advocating for our Members – which include not only the big-name retailers and high-street chains, but also independent coffee shops, roasters, warehousers, and importers.

“We are the key platform through which businesses from every corner of the country can come together to collaborate and tackle those issues which are greater than any individual organisation. Businesses are rightly asking how we can be both commercially successful, as well as sustainable, something which the BCA has been exploring in-depth.

“It is the sense of community I feel that has kept me committed to the coffee industry over the past decade, and I’m passionate about bringing more diverse, independent, and dynamic businesses into the BCA. I’m really looking forward to a busy few years!”

Krisztina follows Andrew Kerr as Chair. He spent two years in the role, which saw the BCA acting as a conduit to greater engagement with the global coffee sector as part of the move to drive a sustainable circular coffee economy.

The board of directors of illycaffè has appointed Cristina Scocchia as the company’s new CEO, effective 1 January 2022.

Scocchia, a member of illycaffè’s board since 2019, will take the reins from Massimiliano Pogliani, who first joined illy six years ago as the first outside CEO to manage the family-owned business. He ran the global organisation for two consecutive three-year mandates starting in 2016. Pogliani will remain in his role until 31 December 2021.

In announcing the executive change, the company stated that in view of the bullish capital markets and the desire to start a stock listing process, in addition to Pogliani’s interest in pursuing other professional opportunities, the board agreed to bring forward the expiry date of his second term to ensure cohesive management for the entire 2022 financial year.

As illycaffè’s first CEO from outside the illy family, Pogliani contributed to the company’s growth, especially in household consumption within portioned coffee segment and in online sales, as well as realising sustainability achievements and results confirmed by obtaining B-Corp certification.

“With Rhône’s minority stake acquisition in our company this year, Massimiliano Pogliani completed a process of managerial development at illycaffè that he was appointed to accomplish in his role since 2016”, said Andrea Illy, chairman of Trieste, Italy-based illycaffè. “I thank him for his work, and I particularly appreciate his leadership that allowed the company to be resilient during the pandemic including growth in the digital and food channels. For the new expansion cycle that will start in 2022 and in view of a future stock listing, we decided to entrust the leadership to Cristina Scocchia, a talented manager recognised in the development of brands with high aesthetic and experiential content.”

With a degree in business and economics from Bocconi University in Milan and a PhD in Business Administration from the University of Turin, Cristina Scocchia has been CEO of Kiko SpA since July 2017. Previously she worked at Procter & Gamble, holding positions of increasing responsibility, and at L’Oréal Italia, where she held the positions of CEO and chairwoman. She is also a member of the board of directors of Essilor Luxottica.

The announcement of Scocchia as the new CEO follows a series of strategic moves and corporate changes that have taken place within illycaffè over the last year. In November 2020, the company announced it sold a minority stake of illycaffè to affiliates of Rhône Capital, a global private equity firm with a focus on investments in businesses with pan-European, North American or transatlantic presence. In April of this year, illycaffè became the first Italian coffee company to obtain the B Corp certification, awarded to companies that meet the highest standards for social and environmental performance, transparency, and responsibility. B-Corp certified companies operate to optimise their positive impact on employees, their communities, and the environment.

Additionally, illycaffè named Jack Edwards president of New York-based illy North America, effective 19 April. He succeeded Barry Shelton, who spent 18 years with the company.

illycaffè also announced that the 6th Annual Ernesto illy International Coffee Awards, which the company bestows upon the best producer of sustainable coffee, will take place 2 December, virtually for the second year in a row.

Starbucks Coffee Company has announced the promotion of Leo Tsoi to chief executive officer of Starbucks China. Serving as Starbucks China’s chief operating officer and president of Starbucks Retail for the last five years, Tsoi has led efforts to grow Starbucks footprint across the Chinese mainland to 5,200 stores across more than 200 cities today. He has engineered the development of a robust and diversified store portfolio by pioneering new store concepts, which have influenced new coffee-inspired lifestyles and further elevated third place experiences for Starbucks customers in China.

As one of the leading architects behind Starbucks China’s phenomenal growth since he rejoined the company in 2012, Tsoi previously served in various leadership positions, including vice president of North China region, chief marketing officer, and vice president of Store Development and Design, making many important contributions to strengthening Starbucks coffee leadership and elevating the Starbucks Experience.

“Leo has relentlessly pushed the envelope on innovation in China where customer loyalty and love for the Starbucks brand is unmatched,” said Kevin Johnson, president and ceo, Starbucks Coffee Company. “Our strong growth in China is a testimony to our deep bench of talented leaders and their relentless pursuit of further elevating the Starbucks Experience for our customers. I have great confidence in Leo’s ability to continue building the relationships we have with our Chinese customers through our rapidly growing store footprint, market-leading digital ecosystem and customer engagement, and robust innovation pipeline.”

With Tsoi’s promotion, Molly Liu is being elevated to chief operating officer of Starbucks China. Liu is a nine-year partner (employee) responsible for leading the development of Starbucks China’s Digital Ventures business, a leading growth engine for the company. As vice president and general manager of Digital Ventures, Liu has set the foundation for Starbucks China digital flywheel through pursuing relentless innovation and building landmark digital partnerships. Under her leadership, the Digital Ventures team has continuously up-leveled the Starbucks Rewards program while launching innovative and unique digital experiences including Starbucks Delivers (MOD), Starbucks Now (MOP), and Delivery Social Gifting, among others.

With these promotions, Belinda Wong will continue to serve as chairman of Starbucks China, focusing her attention toward delivering a holistic, long term strategy for Starbucks in the market, driving innovation through Starbucks Siren Ventures in China and other partnership opportunities, as well as elevating social impact in local communities through the Beijing Starbucks Foundation.

“Starbucks success in China today would not have been possible without Belinda’s visionary leadership over the past decade, leading the company to achieve unprecedented growth and transformation with her courage, steely determination, and deep passion for Starbucks and our partners,” said Johnson. “I look forward to continue working with Belinda as she focuses on long term strategy, innovation and leading engagement with key public and private sector stakeholders to unlock transformative opportunities for our business in this critical market.”

Santiago Gowland has joined the Rainforest Alliance as chief executive officer (CEO), effective 18 May. He will be based in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Gowland succeeds Han de Groot, who left the Rainforest Alliance (RA) in Spring 2020 after a 10-year career with the organisation, including eight years with UTZ prior to the January 2018 merger. Since de Groot’s departure, board member Annemieke Wijn has worked with the leadership team in an interim role, as RA launched the search for a new CEO.

Gowland, a native of Argentina with a passion for conservation and sustainability, brings extensive expertise in organizational innovation and sustainability transformation across multiple sectors, cultures, and continents. His career is focused on bridging supply chain and landscape needs through business innovations for leading brands including Unilever, Nike and Estée Lauder.

Gowland most recently served as executive vice president for Latin America and Global Innovation at The Nature Conservancy. At The Nature Conservancy, he championed the green technology strategy through systems innovation, partnerships with technology companies, and embracing lean methodologies — most notably, through the pioneering “Agility Lab.”

“I am thrilled to contribute my global conservation and business insights to accelerate the Rainforest Alliance’s vision of a world where people and nature thrive together. It’s crucial that we leverage social and market forces to protect nature and improve the lives of farmers and forest communities without delay. The Rainforest Alliance is uniquely positioned to bring farmers, forest communities, companies and consumers together to build a more sustainable and resilient future for people and nature,” Gowland said.

The Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit working in more than 70 countries to protect forests and biodiversity, take action on climate, and promote the rights and improve the livelihoods of rural people.

The organisation transforms the way the world produces, sources, and consumes, with a focus on cocoa, coffee, tea, bananas, forest products, and palm oil. Its four areas of work are certification, landscape management, supply chain services, and advocacy.

In 2020, 6.8 million hectares of land and more than 2.3 million farmers were certified according to the Rainforest Alliance’s rigorous sustainability standards, which are designed to improve economic, environmental, and social impacts for people and nature.

Numi Organic Tea, leading purchaser of organic, Fair Trade Certified teas, has announced the appointment of Brian Durkee, Numi’s current president, as the company’s new CEO. He will take on day-to-day leadership of Numi, while co-founder Ahmed Rahim will assume the role of CVO (chief visionary officer), working closely with Durkee and his sister and co-founder, Reem Hassani, to set the vision and trajectory of the company.

A 25-year veteran of the natural and specialty food industry who has spent the last 17 of those years at Numi, Durkee has been instrumental in the company’s growth and organisational development. In addition to leading the Numi team and driving overall company strategy and culture, Durkee has managed strategic partnerships, financial planning and execution, sales and marketing initiatives, global supply chain developments, and product innovation. He travels abroad frequently and has worked intimately with customers and suppliers from more than 35 countries. Durkee holds an MBA from Saint Mary’s College and a BS in Systems Management from the University of San Francisco. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the DMBA programme at California College of the Arts.

Ahmed Rahim, Numi’s co-founder and new CVO, will continue his position as Board chair, guiding Numi’s regenerative work, innovation, and strategic partnerships. “Beyond the leadership and growth Brian has achieved, he has been critical in leading Numi through the difficult year of 2020,” said Rahim. “His skill at navigating Numi through the pandemic with grace and humbleness has kept the team focused on what matters. From the first day Brian joined us, he has embodied and helped co-create the vision of Numi. Brian holds our staff, customers, and collective stakeholders as the backbone of Numi, while driving forward the needs of the business. He approaches each day with a positive outlook and listens to the business’ needs with thoughtfulness and care.”

“Since Brian Durkee came to Numi as an Operations Director 17 years ago, he has grown professionally and developed personally into a remarkable, service-oriented leader,” said Reem Hassani, Numi’s co-founder and chief brand officer. “His passion and love for Numi and all it stands for has been the driving force behind our partnerships in Fair Trade and equity for workers, sustainability and climate action, and the strong team loyalty we’ve built over the years.”

Durkee has played a key role in several initiatives that Numi is known for. He led efforts to push the Non-GMO Project to change its standard on immersion packaging—which includes tea bags. Prior to that, only tea ingredients were included in the standard, allowing manufacturers of GMO-sourced bioplastic tea bags to claim Non-GMO Verification. In 2007, he helped co-create Numi’s Verified Fair Labor certification, a continuous improvement programme that ensures fair wages and safe working conditions where Numi’s tea is grown. He also worked with Ahmed Rahim to build OSC’s first Packaging Collaborative in 2013, setting Numi and other natural products brands on a path to bring compostable flexible film to market. Durkee’s focus on creating direct relationships that foster improved standards of living has led to deep and lasting partnerships, ensuring transparency and stability for Numi’s supply chain.

Durkee’s impact-driven leadership and advocacy will shepherd in a new phase of growth for Numi as it continues its work using business for good and Activating Purpose in the communities it touches. Recent milestones for the company include the launch of its first compostable tea wrapper, achieving Climate Neutral certification, and mobilising Numi Foundation for Covid relief—delivering over 350,000lbs of fresh produce to Bay Area families in need.
