The third edition of the World of Coffee 2024 exhibition will run from 21 – 23 January 2024, at Dubai World Trade Centre, and it will witness the participation of 1,650 companies and brands from across 51 countries in its third edition.

The three-day event, which is held in collaboration with the Specialty Coffee Association, will feature coffee companies and brands from countries, including the US, Germany, Canada, Slovakia, Portugal, Ireland, Kuwait, Norway, Taiwan, Thailand, Pakistan, Iran, and Australia, among many others. There are seven national pavilions participating, which is double the number from the previous edition, with a strong presence from India, Myanmar, Rwanda, Uganda, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and El Salvador.

Khalid Al Hammadi, senior vice president of DXB LIVE, commented, “We take great pride in gathering numerous nations, businesses, brands, experts, and specialists in the coffee industry at this exhibition. We are confident that this event will serve as a significant opportunity for exhibitors to showcase their innovative products, services, and pioneering projects in this dynamic industry. Additionally, it will also provide a productive forum for interaction between exhibitors and visitors from various parts of the globe to exchange valuable insights, expertise, and innovations in the coffee sector. By bringing together industry players, pioneers, influencers, and senior employees under one roof, we are committed to developing the exhibition and strengthening its reputation. We are on constant pursuits to enhance its key role as an active and influential player in the development of the coffee sector locally, regionally, and globally.”

The World of Coffee 2024 has signed a strategic partnership agreement with DMCC – Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, the world’s flagship free zone and Government of Dubai Authority on commodities trade and enterprise – which, through its world-class facilities at DMCC Coffee Centre, provides a wide range of services for the entire coffee value chain, including temperature-controlled storage, value-add and commercial space, inbound/outbound logistics support, warehousing, roasting, packaging and distribution services. DMCC Coffee Centre will set up a dedicated Farmers Pavilion at the exhibition to provide farmers from different coffee-producing nations and regions with the opportunity to showcase and sell green coffee beans. The pavilion will serve to assist farmers in enhancing their presence in the global coffee market, in addition to allowing visitors to taste, choose and learn about coffee beans and their sources. Farmers and organisations from Rwanda, Colombia, Honduras, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Ethiopia will represent millions of farmers in the world’s coffee belt. DMCC Coffee Centre will be in charge of promoting the ‘Farmers Pavilion’ on all marketing channels through the Centre’s database. In addition, it will also host an informational campaign for visitors and exhibitors as well as invite experts and dignitaries to participate in this event.

Saeed Al Suwaidi, director of Agri Commodities at DMCC, said, “We are confident that all of our key stakeholders across the coffee value chain will benefit from our strategic partnership with the World of Coffee. The Farmers Pavilion will further consolidate Dubai’s position as a major international hub for coffee trading and will serve as a platform to connect all relevant players in the coffee community, from farmers to traders and consumers, in line with our vision and objective to grow the local and global coffee business from Dubai. In particular, the pavilion will facilitate the exchange of skills and knowledge among individuals in the roasting field, help drive new business prospects, and improve the experience of both visitors and farmers by providing them with opportunities to sample and choose from the best kinds of green coffee beans. We believe that coffee is a universal language that connects people from around the world, and we look forward to enhancing global coffee trade by supporting the farmers’ pavilion.”

The World of Coffee features a variety of events and activities. This includes the ‘UAE National Barista Championship’, the ‘National Latte Art Championship’, and the ‘Coffee Design Awards’ and ‘Best New Product competitions’, in addition to the main pavilions such as the Roasters Village and the Cabining Room and Brew Bar. The event will further entail a set of lectures and workshops. This will feature the presence of a group of associations specialised in the coffee industry, including the Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association, the Saudi Coffee Company, the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama, and the Uganda Coffee Development Authority.

The presence of these associations holds significance owing to their role in enhancing quality and standards in coffee production, increasing trade and consumption of coffee, as well as representing and supporting the interests and rights of farmers, roasters, manufacturers, distributors, and consumers. Additionally, it would also foster cooperation and exchange of experiences between countries and regions producing and consuming coffee, as well as enhance awareness of its culture, history, benefits, types, and methods in preparing coffee. It will further promote innovation, development, and adoption of advanced technologies within the ever-evolving coffee industry.

Over 1,650 global, regional, and local companies and brands will be participating in this exhibition to display their range of products and services related to the coffee industry, such as green and roasted coffee beans. Participating businesses will include those who provide roasting, packaging, and processing services in addition to those that supply coffee-manufacturing equipment, water, milk, and flavourings. These participants include 60 companies and brands from the UAE, like Three Coffee, Q Coffee, and Coffee Planet. Further, a total of 17 firms participating in the event, including Colombini Srl, Mazzer Luigi Spa, and Lelit Italy, are Italian brands and enterprises that will also be participating in the exhibition. Additionally, around nine firms and brands from the United States and eight companies from China will be participating in the exhibition.

The World of Coffee 2024 exhibition invites visitors to Zabeel Halls 4, 5, and 6 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, from 21 to 23 January 2024. Those who wish to participate and visit the exhibition can register via the following link: dubai.worldofcoffee.org/visitor-registration.

IEG Asia Pte Ltd has recently acquired the food & beverage (F&B) event titles – the Speciality Food & Drinks Asia, Speciality Coffee & Tea Asia and Food2Go – from Montgomery Asia. This strategic move fortifies IEG Asia’s commitment to contributing positively to the F&B landscape in Singapore and ASEAN markets.

Taking place from 26 – 28 June 2024 at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre, Singapore, these three event titles will co-locate alongside the inaugural edition of SIGEP Asia, the International Trade Show of Artisan Gelato, Pastry, Bakery, Coffee & Tea, held in conjunction with the 5th Restaurant Asia, the International Restaurant, Kitchen and Culinary Equipment & Supplies Exhibition.

These consolidated events promise a highly-specialised trade event catering to the needs of the F&B sector – all under one roof – for industry titans and start-ups alike. The convergence offers a comprehensive showcase of the latest trends and innovations, and a dynamic platform for networking and collaboration through receptions, comprehensive conferences & seminars, engaging masterclasses, and demonstrations on the show floor.

Moreover, these events will be bolstered by an exclusive hosted buyers’ programme (Buyer X), designed to facilitate meaningful interactions, partnerships, and business opportunities at an international level.

Christopher McCuin, managing director of Montgomery Asia said, “Since launching this event in 2017, our aim has been to deliver the very best of global gourmet, craft and speciality F&B products to the Singapore and SE Asia markets. We are proud to have delivered exactly that. The Singapore F&B event space is extremely busy and we believe that the coming together of these events will help consolidate this exciting marketplace. We would like to thank all our partners, associations and clients for their long-standing support, many of whom have been with us since the very first edition”.

Corrado Peraboni, CEO of IEG, commented on the recent acquisition saying, “This move marks another significant advancement for our Group on the global front. Over the past few years, we have deepened our commitment to organising B2B events in fields which we are notably strong, with a particular focus on the growing food & beverage sector. The events we hold in Singapore are strategically positioned within this key business hub in Asia, offering access to vital markets that are crucial for the growth of the food sector. This positioning greatly enhances the value of our IEG fairs, bolstered by the extensive network of companies and operators we have incorporated through this acquisition. These efforts align with our mission to become a global community catalyst, fostering collaborative and mutually beneficial relationships.”

Francesco Santa, international business development director at IEG announced “The synergy of these events under the IEG umbrella will undoubtedly set a new benchmark for boutique trade exhibitions, aligning perfectly with our mission to deliver an extraordinary experience for all our stakeholders. This strategic expansion is a clear reflection of our unflinching dedication to exceed the expectations of our exhibition partners and visitors. It’s a step forward in our unwavering commitment to excellence in the F&B and hospitality industries.”

“In less than a year since its inception on 1 March 2023, IEG Asia has grown its portfolio of events, especially in the F&B industry. I have every confidence that together, these events will set a new benchmark for boutique trade exhibitions in Singapore and ASEAN’s F&B arena, and is in line with our dedication to curating an extraordinary experience for our stakeholders, exhibition partners and visitors,” said Ilaria Cicero, CEO of IEG Asia.

ofi’s Carbon Scenario Planner (CSP), a new digital tool developed to help food and beverage manufacturers model the impact of different scenarios for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, has won the 2023 Sustainability Innovation Award at Food Ingredients Europe in Frankfurt. This is the second year in a row that ofi has been awarded this recognition, following last year’s award for its Cocoa COMPASS sustainability strategy.

The CSP allows ofi to model the outcome of different decarbonisation interventions tailored to local contexts, so it can work with its customers to plan and cost out climate actions. It helps ofi customers tackle the complex and challenging issue of Scope 3 emissions which occur in a company’s value chain and make up the bulk of the food and beverage industry’s carbon footprint.

Dr Christopher Stewart, global head of sustainability at ofi, said, “We’re delighted that Food Ingredients Europe has chosen to recognise the progress we’ve made. For our customers, knowing where carbon emissions are coming from in their supply chains is critical to understanding how to reduce them cost-effectively, and meet science-based climate targets. The Carbon Scenario Planner translates ideas into detailed, robustly modelled scenarios that can deliver long-term greenhouse gas reductions.”

The tool is embedded into ofi’s sustainability management system, AtSource, which provides customers with data and insights for use in reporting their environmental, social, and economic impacts. ofi recently used the tool with a global coffee company to whom it supplies Guatemalan coffee beans. It modelled a 32% carbon reduction scenario to help support the customer’s climate commitments, identifying three impactful scenarios: using training for farmers to help them upcycle coffee waste, replacing chemical fertiliser with organic, and providing farmers with semi-mechanised tools to improve yields.

The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) has announced World of Coffee Panama, the first World of Coffee event to be held in Central America.

The event was solidified at an inaugural signing in Panama City, attended by the SCA board members and chief executive officer, Yannis Apostolopoulos with SCA board president, Konstantinos Konstantinopoulos, alongside The Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP) board members and president, James Hunter Tedman, and The Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama president, Adolfo Fabrega.

World of Coffee Panama will take place at the Panama Convention Center in October 2026. This inaugural World of Coffee in Central America will run in addition to the SCA’s annual World of Coffee trade shows in Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

World of Coffee Panama 2026 marks the first World of Coffee trade show in Central America and focuses on a deep-rooted connection to coffee producing regions. This growth highlights the thriving specialty coffee industry in Central America and establishes Panama as an easy-to-reach hub for coffee producers and traders alike. Renowned for its excellence in coffee varietals, agriculture, specialty coffee trade and consumption, Central America stands as an ideal host for World of Coffee, showcasing the region’s significant role in the global coffee landscape.

On the expansion of World of Coffee into Central America in 2026, SCA CEO Yannis Apostolopoulos said, “We are thrilled to bring World of Coffee, our premier coffee trade show, to Central America for the very first time. World of Coffee Panama 2026 is our first-ever trade show in a coffee-producing country and this marks a significant step in our commitment to promoting coffee consumption within producing countries, a key element for the sustainability of coffee and in alignment with the Specialty Coffee Association’s sustainability agenda.

“World of Coffee Panama is the ideal platform for coffee professionals, producers, and traders worldwide to connect, network, and foster innovation in the specialty coffee sector. We are proud to collaborate with The Specialty Coffee Association of Panama and The Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama on this project. As our official licensed partners, we are excited for them to produce a World of Coffee tailored to the unique coffee culture in this region, highlighting Central America’s important role in the global coffee industry.”

Adolfo Fábrega, president of the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama (CCIAP), stated, “This is an excellent opportunity, our country has been selected for the first edition of the World of Coffee in Latin America. Panamanians will be able to show the world the great potential of the exportable offer that we have and promote our high-altitude coffee, which is a source of pride, particularly in recent years, when it has had positive behaviour with the Geisha,” he added.

In addition, he thanked the Specialty Coffee Association, as well as the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama for the “trust placed in the CCIAP that for 40 years has organised international great events such as the famous Expocomer, Expo Logistica Panama and Expo Turismo Internacional, among others.”

James Hunter Tedman, president of the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama added, “In SCAP we are very proud that the Specialty Coffee Association has chosen our country for the first Latin American World of Coffee. We see it as a recognition of the hard work Panama has done positioning our coffees as one of the best in the world, as the best expression of ‘Specialty Coffee’. The World of Coffee Panama will highly impact many industries in our country, tourism, commerce and the service sectors will benefit tremendously. Our partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Panama will strengthen our Association and secure the success of this project.”

At this year’s European Coffee Awards gala in Barcelona, Radu Savopol, co-founder of the Romanian brand 5 to go, was named winner in the Outstanding Contribution to the European Coffee Industry category, a confirmation of the significant impact of his innovative entrepreneurial strategy not only locally, but also internationally. At the same event, the 5 to go brand was nominated for Best Coffee Chain in Central/Eastern Europe.

Organised by Allegra Insights, a UK research agency, the European Coffee Awards are the most prestigious awards in the European coffee and hospitality sector, promoting and celebrating the excellence of companies with spectacular performances and results. Now in its 14th year, the Awards bring together the industry’s top leaders each year and the winners are chosen after rigorous analysis by a team of expert analysts and researchers.

“This was not the first nomination or recognition we received in the European Coffee Awards and we enjoyed each one equally, and this result is a first we had not hoped for and a confirmation we experienced with overwhelming excitement. It means a lot to us that the 5 to go brand has become a landmark and that we are present and awarded at such large-scale events, in order to make the Romanian coffee industry known internationally. Certainly, this award will be a catalyst for the performance of our business, because such a result must be reflected in all the characteristics of the 5 to go brand, from the quality of the products to the ability to transform and adapt to customer expectations and market evolution”, said Radu Savopol.

With over 20 years of experience in the HoReCa field and an entrepreneurial start as a pub owner, Radu Savopol had, in 2015, together with Lucian Bădilă, the vision to develop the 5 to go business, which is today the most accessed franchise in Romania, already present in 105 cities in the country.

This achievement comes after winning several trophies at the Horeca Awards, a gala organised in Romania by Horeca Insight Magazine: the 1st prize and the public award for the best coffee shop/cafeteria, the 1st prize for the Man of the Year in HoReCa, Radu Savopol, and the 3rd prize for the best barista, Laurențiu Sava, 5 to go trainer, two other 5 to go trainers being also nominated in the top 5 barista in Romania.

The post Know your purpose: maximising the creativity of your business appeared first on Tea & Coffee Trade Journal.

The last few years have dramatically accelerated artificial intelligence and automation to resolve key industry challenges. This has sparked conversations about the role that humans play in operations, with creativity becoming recognised as the unique element that distinguishes humans from machines.

On 9 November, the keynote speaker at the Canadian Coffee Association’s (CAC) conference, Daniel Lamarre, vice-chair of the board, Cirque du Soleil and author of Balancing Acts: Unleashing the Power of Creativity in Your Life and Work, challenged the coffee industry to both identify and embrace their innate creativity. During this dynamic conversation, he shared several examples of how creativity was an essential element of the company’s success and its role in reviving Cirque du Soliel after the mandated shutdown during the pandemic.

Ideas, on their own, are not enough, stressed Lamarre, as ideas will fall flat without a sense of purpose and direction. Advanced artificial intelligence can use algorithms and data to populate ideas for products and services. However, where artificial intelligence fails is in distinguishing which of these ideas should be put to fruition.

The human element is required to determine which of these concepts aligns with the purpose and brand of the business and to help put the strategy in place to move the idea into reality.

The core of creativity is not an artistic pursuit but about developing and implementing something that was not there before. This includes facing challenges and investing the time to discover new solutions. True creativity requires collaboration, listening, debating, paying attention to your intuition, and being willing to move quickly. “In an accelerated world, you cannot predict everything and eliminate all risks,” shared Lamarre. It is about going beyond the idea and investing the time to discover your purpose and allow that to drive you.

“Creativity is about leaning into, not just advertising, agility, problem solving, all of those things are important in a sea of change, to be able to navigate that and have a creative advantage is massive,” said Tracey Cooke, SVP, marketing and commercialisation, head of the Centre of Marketing Excellence, Nestlé, during a panel discussion at the CAC Conference. “There are types of tasks that artificial intelligence can do well; it is all about embracing it for what it can unlock. However, generating ideas and implementing the strategy are areas that require human expertise.”

Integrating artificial intelligence and automation into an operation will not extinguish the need to be creative. In fact, it might give businesses the drive to adopt a more creative mindset to ensure their operation remains unique and relevant. By allocating automation to standardised tasks, human resources can focus on tasks that require deep thinking and, in turn, present the opportunity for more innovation and increased alignment with brand values and purpose.

World of Coffee Dubai 2024 has announced a wide range of specialised activities that aims to boost cooperation and partnerships between the exhibitors and visitors while exploring opportunities in the growing coffee sector.

The key agenda of the event, which will held from 21-23 January 2024, includes various programmes namely, the Roaster Village, the Cup Room, and the Brew Bar. Additionally, the exhibition will feature spaces specifically designed to draw attention to the importance of promoting sustainable practices in the industry through several discussions, specialised workshops on sustainability, best practices for utilising resources, and sustainable initiatives that demonstrate the commitment of the international coffee community to responsible production.

The exhibition will also set the stage for the launch of various new events, like the Franchise Village, a platform that will bring together leading brands seeking to expand in the region and investors interested in establishing branches of renowned coffee brands. The platform will reinforce the position of the World of Coffee as a key event for exploring growth and collaboration opportunities.

Among the exhibition’s features and programmes, the Buyers Program and Buyers Longue will enable meetings between buyers and farmers, traders, distributors, and roasters, as well as food and beverage managers from the tourism and hospitality sectors. It will further encourage interaction and communication among industry stakeholders and offer an ideal setting for potential partnerships and transactions.

In addition, the 2024 edition will be held in two large theatres to accommodate more participants for its series of dialogues and free workshops. One theatre will be dedicated to hosting specialised coffee association dialogues, while the other will be for unfiltered sessions, like hosting extensive dialogues with the presence of numerous global experts and specialists to discuss the latest trends, innovations, and products worldwide.

The Roasting Village, Cupping Room, and Brew Bar pavilions are also expanding to meet the growing demand for participation. The Roasters Village area is expected to be one of the most popular areas for attendees as it will exhibit coffee-making machines and water sources. The participating businesses will also make coffee and display their coffee beans. Along with specialised guests, it brings together a dozen global businesses and offers an opportunity to sample coffee that has been prepared and roasted in a variety of methods.

The ’Cupping Room’ pavilion will enable visitors to taste and compare different coffee varieties and evaluate their quality. During their one-hour sessions, each company will provide a set of coffee-tasting sessions for buyers and the public to try and compare. The Brew Bar pavilion, which is made up of two large platforms, can accommodate 12 enterprises. Businesses may utilise the platform for three hours to offer different coffee-tasting sessions and customers can wander between the businesses to sample the coffee and watch baristas creating inventive concoctions.

Innovation platform

To encourage innovation and development in the sector, the exhibition will feature the Coffee Design Award, which will highlight the latest advancements in coffee preparation, equipment, and sustainable practices. It will be awarded in various categories including design, packaging, branding, coffee cups, and coffee pots. Furthermore, the ‘Best New Product Award’ will be awarded for exceptional new coffee-related products. To participate in the awards, companies will have to submit their designs on the competition website, further enabling judges to choose winners. The exhibition offers a remarkable opportunity for participants to win the International Specialised Coffee Association’s award for the best design or best product worldwide for 2024.

Ensuring an enhanced experience for participants

Khalid Al Hammadi, senior vice president of DXB LIVE, said: “Through this edition, we aim to boost the position of World of Coffee Dubai to be the most preferred global platform for coffee industry leaders. We strongly believe the event will surpass the conventional trade show paradigm, securing its reputation as the world’s preeminent forum for enthusiasts, professionals, and experts to stay current on industry developments and explore novel strategies and ecologically sustainable practices that will further the industry’s expansion and sustainability.”

“The exhibition provides a significant opportunity to learn about the various sources of coffee beans, roasters, and coffee supply chain as well as to assess the latest advancements in the fields of packaging, distribution, and production. The events, especially the Buyers’ program, will improve participants’ experience and enable them to interact directly to grow and maintain their enterprises,” Al Hammadi added.

Preserving the future of coffee through regenerative agriculture was the marquis topic at the Ernesto Illy International Coffee Award (EIICA) breakfast on 16 November. The EIICA, now the eighth edition, returned to New York City for the first time since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The EIICA is a two-part event in which the nine country finalists are announced during a breakfast, also involves a ‘state-of-the-coffee-industry’ presentation or discussion, followed by an evening dinner where the Coffee Lovers Award and the EIICA are announced.

I was honoured to moderate yesterday’s morning events at the UN headquarters, which, this year, featured a panel of leading experts in the coffee sector discussing the urgency of preserving and protecting the future of coffee through regenerative agriculture. The panelists also appealed to the international financial community (some of whom were in the audience) to invest in the transition to regenerative agriculture through public and private partnerships. Panelists included: Vanusia Nogueira, executive director, International Coffee Organization (ICO); Jeffrey Sachs, economy professor at Columbia University (NYC) and co-chair Regenerative Society Foundation; Oscar Schaps, president of the Latin America division of StoneX Financial Inc. and commodity trader; and Glaucio De Castro, president of Federação dos Cafeicultores do Cerrado Mineiro.

Andrea Illy, chairman of illycaffè and co-chair of Regenerative Society Foundation, kicked off the panel discussion reminding the audience of the impact the low and volatile coffee prices have had on farming communities. He explained that improvements the ‘caffeculture’ has achieved in recent decades through the process of de-commoditization – improvements that still have a long way to go before achieving economic, social and environmental sustainability – are at risk of being reversed due to climate change. Regenerative agriculture, Illy said, has proven to be more resilient and to produce both environmental and health benefits. “Today we have proof that this model works, it is essential to implement it.”

Glaucio De Castro, president of Federação dos Cafeicultores do Cerrado Mineiro (Brazil) is a pioneer of regenerative agriculture. He began transitioning to regenerative agriculture several ago, and although he admits it is challenging and changes and tweaks were – and still are – De Castro sees the benefits and believes regenerative agriculture is the “[way to go].”

While regenerative agriculture is the agreed upon model by the panelists, it is costly — it requires investments of approximately US $10 billion over the next ten years. Of course, producing countries do not have sufficient economic-financial capacity, so it is necessary to create private and public partnerships that can generate international supply chain funds (this challenge is nothing new as governmental, intergovernmental, non-governmental and private stakeholders have been involved or approached for many years).

“To have a future in coffee we need to think about the planet and the people involved,” said Vanusia Nogueira, executive director, ICO. “It’s part of our responsibility as leaders of this sector to look for alternatives to provide good life to the producers and their families and also to take care of our planet. It’s clear that the challenges are big enough to not be addressed individually but in a collective and pre-competitive effort. Together I believe we can find impactful solutions.”

Economist Jeffrey Sachs, who is an internationally recognized leader in the field of sustainable development, said that true economic development aims to transform our society by creating sustainable increases in wellbeing through investments in human capital, physical infrastructure, and business enterprise, all with attention to the preserve natural capital on which our economy and survival depend.

“My morning coffee will never be grown in Central Park but will continue to be grown in Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Colombia, Vietnam, and elsewhere. A well-managed developing country with access to major markets and international finance can grow very quickly,” Sachs continued, noting, “after decades of severe human-induced environmental degradation, we need to transform our economies to the core principles of sustainable development and the regeneration of natural capital. The most basic principle of all is to act for the common good. This means that we must start from cooperation within our communities, our nations, and globally.”

Andrea Illy concluded the panel discussion explaining that two things are needed for adaptation to climate change: improved agronomic practices and the renewal of plantations with more resistant varieties. “Regenerative agriculture seems to provide an answer to the first need, and I hope that this will become a model for the whole ‘caffeculture’. As far as renewal is concerned, we need to speed up considerably. All this requires supply chain investments that cannot be delayed any longer.”

The 8th Ernesto Illy International Award ‘Best of the Best’ and ‘Coffee Lovers Choice’ winners were announced at an evening gala at the New York Public Library. The 2023 ‘Best of the Best’ winner is São Mateus Agropecuária from Brazil and the 2023 ‘Coffee Lover’s Choice’ winner is Finca Danilandia from Guatemala.

Today, Starbucks is opening a new store on Edinburgh’s iconic Princes Street that features incredible views of Edinburgh Castle.

Measuring in at 8,000sqft, the new Starbucks location is the biggest store Starbucks has opened in the UK in recent years, spread across two floors to accommodate the busy shopping and tourist route. The first floor, where the main seating area will be, offers spectacular views of the Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street gardens.

The 18th century listed building used to be home to an HSBC Bank and had been vacant since 2021. The redesign and refurbishment carried out by Starbucks not only breathes new life into the building but also pays homage to the rich history and characteristic architecture of Scotland’s capital.

Alex Rayner, vice president and general manager at Starbucks UK, said: “We are thrilled to welcome the local community and those visiting Edinburgh to our new Princes Street store. One of our largest openings in recent years, the design is all centred around highlighting the iconic local landscape, it’s an exciting way to close off the celebrations of our 25th anniversary in the UK.

“The store’s concept is a homage to Edinburgh – a perfect blend between old and new.The curved arch feature over the bar symbolizes the Edinburgh Vaults, but the main statement is undoubtedly the spectacular view of Edinburgh Castle.”

The new store on 118 Princes Street represents an enhancement of the former Starbucks outlet at 120 Princes Street, which closed last month in anticipation of this relocation. All partners (employees) have been transferred from the previous store, and ten new jobs have been created in the local area.

Repurposed from a vacant unit, the Edinburgh store is certified as a Greener Store, meeting 25 required standards, as verified by an outside auditor, across eight environmental impact areas such as energy efficiency, water stewardship and waste diversion. This brings the environmental impact of running the store as low as possible, as part of Starbucks ongoing commitment to sustainability and becoming resource positive. This also includes offering a 25p discount to all customers who bring a reusable cup when purchasing a drink.

This latest store opening is another step in Starbucks plans for growth in the UK, with many more stores planned for communities across the UK, particularly in key city and drive thru locations and with a focus on innovative store formats such as smaller, digitally forward stores.

Customers visiting the new store will be able to choose from a range of beverages and food available from Starbucks Holiday menu. This includes the returning Toffee Nut Latte, Gingerbread Latte, Eggnog Latte, Caramel Waffle Latte and the brand-new Hazelnut Crunch Hot Chocolate. Starbucks® UK proudly serves a broad range of dairy alternative options for free.

Starbucks is committed to 100% ethically sourced coffee in partnership with Conservation International. The cornerstone of its ethical sourcing approach to buying coffee is Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices.

The new store will be open from 07:00 to 21:00 Monday to Sunday.

eteaket, the Edinburgh based speciality tea company, achieved success at the Pentawards Gala, held in London 10 November. The company’s innovative retail cartons, designed with a keen focus on sustainability, earned it the Silver award in the Sustainable Design Category.

The Pentawards, founded in 2007, has been a beacon of global excellence in packaging design, with its annual competition attracting over 30,000 entries from 95 countries over the past 16 years. eteaket’s recognition on this stage underscores its commitment to pushing the boundaries of sustainable packaging, the company says.

eteaket’s Retail Carton Sustainable Credentials

At the heart of eteaket’s success is its sustainability-focused novel construction design, which significantly reduces the use of production materials. The design allows for the creation of only six full cartons, compared to the 52+ that would have been required using traditional methods, resulting in an estimated saving of 75 square meters of aluminium in production.

The innovative box design enables sleeves to slide and lock securely in place, facilitating small manufacturing runs and eliminating overstock. This not only ensures a positive reduction in manufacturing materials but also delivers a fully finished, consistent, and professionally presented product with sustainability at its core. The award winning cartons mean they can create bespoke tea blends & retail artwork for companies including Scottish Ballet, Aberfeldy Whisky Distillery and Social Bite.

eteaket’s commitment to environmental responsibility is further evident in the materials used for the carton. Crafted with FSC certified card stock, the carton is fully recyclable, and the inner packet holding the tea is made from a biofilm called Natureflex, which is home compostable.

To reinforce their dedication to minimising environmental impact, both the packaging manufacture – J Thompson Printers, as well as the warehouse are located in Scotland, where the tea is hand packed, localising production.

Coffee Planet, a UAE specialty coffee provider and part of the Ludlow Coffee Group, clinched four awards across categories in the Middle East.

Coffee Planet was recognised as a “UAE Superbrand” at the 19th Annual Superbrands Tribute at Dubai Festival City. The Superbrand title is given to brands that offer consumers significant emotional and/or physical advantages over their competitors.

The company was also recognised by the Asian Business Review, receiving two awards in the Food and Beverage category. Team Coffee Planet won “Team of the Year – Food & Beverage” at the Middle East Management Excellence Awards in recognition of its passion for investing in people through training, development, employee engagement, and ensuring that Coffee Planet is ultimately an employer of choice. The judges acknowledged Coffee Planet’s collective focus on delivering to customers and working strategically with partners, which led to a record-breaking commercial performance in 2022 with 2023 likely to surpass those levels.

Coffee Planet also took home the “National Business Award for Food and Beverage” in recognition of its development of new products and propositions, including the revamped brand identity and packaging, Campus by Coffee Planet, and the introduction of aluminium capsules and instant coffee. Both Asian Business Review awards acknowledged the strong commercial growth of the business.

The growth story of Coffee Planet has been wedded to a strategy of making specialty coffee inclusive whilst constantly reinventing the brand to be more people-centric and customer-focused. The winning spree was completed with CEO Jamie Brown’s recognition as a “Food Service Icon” at the Retail Middle East Magazine Food Service Icons Awards.

Coffee Planet started a new chapter in May 2023 with a resolution to make specialty coffee accessible to all customers, channels, and markets globally. This strategy propelled the company to new heights, and it expanded its offerings locally, regionally, and globally. The SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) – accredited educational facility, Campus by Coffee Planet continues to attract aspiring and practising talents from the world of coffee to turn their passions into vocations or enhance their coffee careers with a diverse range of brewing, barista, latte art end expert training courses.

The rewards come as the company celebrates its best year in its 18-year history. Jamie Brown said about the year’s successes, “We attribute this phenomenal year to the efforts of our wonderful team, our strategic investments in the business and people, and the unique proposition of striving to make specialty coffee accessible to all.”

Furthermore, Coffee Planet has reinforced its leadership team with three strong additions to keep the growth momentum going into the new year. Rob Saunders, who has operated as non-executive director for several years, joins as the chief finance officer, Wesley Morrissey as sales director, and Matthew Yorke Smith, a founding member of Coffee Planet, moving into his new role as chief operating officer.

Despite softer sales and growing competition, RTD tea remains dominant in the US https://www.teaandcoffee.net/blog/33189/despite-softer-sales-and-growing-competition-rtd-tea-remains-dominant-in-the-us/ https://www.teaandcoffee.net/blog/33189/despite-softer-sales-and-growing-competition-rtd-tea-remains-dominant-in-the-us/#respond Thu, 09 Nov 2023 17:11:07 +0000 https://www.teaandcoffee.net/?post_type=blog&p=33189 The refreshment beverage category is fiercely competitive, and although sales have been tepid, the ready-to-drink tea category remains well-positioned from a health and wellness perspective.

The post Despite softer sales and growing competition, RTD tea remains dominant in the US appeared first on Tea & Coffee Trade Journal.

]]>
The North American Tea Conference (NATC) took place last month (6-8 October) and ready-to-drink (RTD) was a primary topic of conversation — aside of course, from the continuing global challenge of the over-production and under-consumption of tea and skyrocketing CPG (consumer packaged goods) prices. It’s no surprise that RTD was a key topic of conversation as the tea category in the United States is still dominated by two formats: tea bags and RTD tea.

Jordan Moore, director, emerging beverages at market research firm, NIQ Consumer & Category Outlook, noted that, although inflation may be decelerating, prices are still trending higher. In fact, CPG inflation has been well above the general inflation average in the US. “Consumers are feeling the pinch, with buying power significantly eroded,” she said, adding that consumers are spending 33% more at the grocery in the past 3+ years.

Any growth is largely inflationary as dollar growth is slowing, and shipments are down, but costs are higher. Tea volumes have been affected by the double-digit price increases. “RTD tea is still outperforming packaged tea, both black and green, with green experiencing the largest drop,” said Moore.

Gary Hemphill, managing director of research at the Beverage Marketing Group, echoed Moore’s comments, explaining that after the pandemic, consumer confidence dropped sharply. “US beverage market growth has been soft in 2022 and 2023 after a pandemic-induced performance rebound in 2021. Revenues have generally outpaced volume growth — a trend that has accelerated since 2021 due mostly to high inflation.”

Refreshment beverages have outperformed the overall beverage market, but volume performance has been soft the last two years, with most refreshment beverage categories experiencing slower growth in 2023. Hemphill said that the total tea category has been soft in recent years as the overall category has experienced modest declines. RTD tea returned to volume losses in 2022 and 2023, after pandemic recovery-based growth in 2021, but he shared, “the category remains well-positioned from a health and wellness perspective.”

It’s not ‘new’ news to say that health and wellness are key market drivers. Hence, beverage categories with health wellness attributes are outperforming those without. “People want healthier refreshment; caloric intake from refreshment beverages has been steadily declining over the last decade,” Hemphill commented, noting that “the diet segment of RTD tea is one of the best developed in all liquid refreshment beverage categories because it also includes unsweetened product.”

As consumers migrate to healthier options, they want more variety, and RTD tea offers that. The bulk of the RTD tea category is comprised of mainstream brands – PepsiCo/Lipton, Arizona and Coca-Cola are the leaders in the RTD tea category with the three combined accounting for more than half of the RTD category – however, both premium and specialty tea have made slight share gains in recent years, as more innovation is coming at the high end of the market.

“Innovations have played a key role in RTD tea, although much of the recent innovation has been in tea-adjacent categories,” Hemphill explained. “Much of the growth of RTD tea has been hived off into separate categories such as kombucha and mate/guayusa, but there are also other attempts at innovation such as cold brew and even herbal tea-based wellness soda.”

He noted that increasingly, there is an overlapping of alcohol and no-alcohol categories. “RTD tea is no exception, providing the foundation for alternative adult beverages such as hard teas and cannabis-infused tea drinks.”

Hemphill stressed that competition in refreshment beverages is fierce with innovation coming from within categories along with new categories emerging.

Beverage-wise, consumers have more than ever to choose from, so for RTD tea to successfully compete, brands must remain innovative and continue to meet consumers’ changing demands and needs.

Tea professionals from all over the world recently gathered at Asia House in central London to celebrate the winners of this year’s International Tea Academy Awards, The Leafies, in partnership with Fortnum & Mason. Three hundred and twenty teas were entered from across the world into nearly fifty categories distinguished by tea type, region and processing at this year’s awards. All teas were judged earlier this month at Fortnum & Mason’s new state of the art Food & Drink Studio at its flagship Piccadilly store.

A total of thirty-six Highly Commended and thirteen Gold awards were presented by The Leafies judges, which include preeminent tea leaders from brands such as Fortnum & Mason, The Ritz London, Postcard Teas, Twinings, Lipton and more. A selection of Special Awards were also presented to individuals, estates, or institutions that were effecting positive change within the industry in areas such as education, community empowerment, innovation and environmental stewardship.

This winner of the Fortnum & Mason Best in Show award, and therefore the highest scoring tea of the entire competition, is Yame Tea Kumaen’s Gyokuro Saemidori, an exquisite steamed green tea produced by a tiny tea garden in a remote mountainous region in Fukuoka, Japan. Guests at the ceremony were able to sample this tea, brewed by Kazumi Nakatani who travelled from Japan, amongst twenty-five of the award-winning teas made available to taste.

Zealong Tea Estate were another notable winner of the afternoon, scooping three awards in total for its Aged Oolong, Aromatic Oolong and the UKTA Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising Zealong’s phenomenal efforts pioneering a tea culture in New Zealand and demonstrating a tireless commitment to environmental regeneration through its sustainable farming practice. Zealong CEO Gigi Crawford and International Marketing Manager Sen Kong were present at the ceremony to serve their teas and said “this award acknowledges 25 years of hard work bringing about a tea industry and culture in New Zealand by Zealong Tea Estate, we are deeply honoured and grateful to receive this award.”

The Leafies aims to connect primary tea producers with buyers and hospitality professionals and offer exposure to a global tea-focused market. A selection of winners will once again be selected for sale across Fortnum & Mason’s Rare Tea Counter, where six winning teas from last year are still currently being sold. Ottilie Cunningham, tea buyer for Fortnum & Mason, said, “An enormous thank you and huge congratulations to everyone for another successful year of The Leafies. The organisation that goes into the entire thing is immense and it is really exciting to see how much it has grown since last year’s launch.”

New for this year were categories for retailers who are selling tea online or in store and connecting tea drinkers with carefully selected high-quality teas. Triple award-winning Japanese tea shop, Chaki Co was started by three former tea producers in March this year. Dorothy’s Teas, a former UK Tea Academy student and retailer based in Cumbria, UK, won Gold in the BRITA sponsored White Tea category for her Shannon Estate Silver Needles White Tea.

The full list of winners is available on the UK Tea Academy website here.

Similar to all the conferences, conventions and exhibitions I have attended this year, the New York Coffee Festival ‘looked and felt’ like its pre-Covid iterations — strong attendance and happy coffee vibes. Event organiser, Allegra Group, reported that the 7th NY show, which took place 6-8 October at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan, had more than 9,000 attendees and over 80 vendors and sponsors.

I was out of town so I was unable to attend the show on the professional’s day – the first day – so instead wound up mingling with consumers the day I attended, which was packed and chaotic, not my ‘cup of coffee’ (pardon the bad pun). Consumer attendees were excited to sample the many offerings ranging from lattes and cold brews to chai teas and matcha to chocolate, and even coffee cocktails. The mix of new and returning exhibitors included Onyx Coffee, Parlor Coffee, Blueberry Roasters, Joe Coffee, Blank Street, Consulate General of India, De’Longhi, ansa, Aeropress, Dona Chai, Rishi Tea, Matcha Direct, Oatly, Hotel Chocolat, Raaka Chocolate, Bailey’s and Smirnoff, amongst others.

Newcomer Café Carrizal was offering samples of single origin Dominican coffee, while Wild House Coffee, another first timer, highlighted its rare Himalayan coffee. Bee 10 Coffee, another new exhibitor, is actually a bee farm, but was showcasing a line of instant coffees blended with different varieties of honey – definitely a unique taste and not for everyone – but it will likely appeal to consumer segment that are fans of 2-in-1 instant coffee mixes.

Bodum, long respected for its French presses and numerous other coffee-brewing devices and accessories, touted its new line of roasted coffee, both whole bean and ground. The company quietly launched it in 2022 but only in select markets, but is now making the line widely available.

The NY Coffee Festival also offered a roster of education sessions across of variety of topics such as Women in Coffee: How to Prioritize Gender Equity across Coffee Supply Chains, Mindful Morning Coffee, Matcha Made in Heaven and Improve Your Brews.

Jeffrey Young, CEO of Allegra Group was pleased with this year’s attendee turnout. “There’s turnover among exhibitors, as many companies are still struggling following Covid, but we do have a several new exhibitors. Attendance is up over 2022 and up slightly from pre-Covid numbers.”

Continuing its charitable component, 100% of profits from the New York Coffee Festival are donated to Project Waterfall each year, which, in partnership with NYC-based charity: water, delivers life-changing water projects in coffee-growing regions. Allegra reports that over USD $2 million has been raised to date. According to Allegra, this year’s event raised over $31k for Project Waterfall. To learn more about both charities, visit: Project Waterfall at projectwaterfall.org and charity: water at charitywater.org.

The New York Coffee Festival will return in 2024, with dates TBA.

It truly is a busy time for industry trade shows at the moment, with the 12th Annual North American Tea Conference in Miami last week, Host Milan kicking off today, and, a bit more local for me, was Caffè Culture in London also last week.

Hosted in Islington’s Business Design Centre, London, it was great to see the coffee and tea industry so well represented at this scale of show compared to the other larger international events taking place at the moment. The show offered a great mix of big names such as Lavazza, Pukka and Sucafina, alongside the smaller-time roasters and newcomer businesses.

Elliot Gard, event director, commented, “One of my favourite things about Caffè Culture is bringing our fantastic industry together to share ideas, build new relationships, learn about the latest trends whilst reacquainting yourselves with old friends and colleagues for two busy days of invaluable networking.”

Alongside the 110 exhibitors, there was a speaker line up of over 40 experts, six of whom attended a panel discussing Supply Chain Sustainability. This included: Emma Haines, UK sales manager, Alegrano; Mandi Caudill, carbon project manager & lead ecologist, Falcon; Sarah Walker, sustainability officer, Origin Coffee; Catalina Gutierrez, co-founder, Cata Export; May Putman Cramer, change manager for sustainability, Sucafina; and Frank Turner, responsible sourcing manager, Taylors of Harrogate.

Catalina and Mandi begun by discussing what their respective companies’ main sustainability focus currently is. Catalina explained that pricing and nurturing connections along their supply chain is important, as stabilsing pricing creates loyalty and trust, and this not only leads to more sustainable relationships, but trust and accountability. Meanwhile Mandi revealed that Falcon currently have 20 different sustainability projects on the go, with lots of data and science driven initiatives. Its main objective is to consolidate how emissions are measured in the coffee industry, and find a common standard to hold companies to, rather than the current individualistic approaches which create a barrier for cross company comparisons and collaborations.

Emma added to this by explaining that access to finance is the main barrier for producer sustainability, alongside a lack of information and education on the issues. Communication at farm level and bringing the producers into the conversation about sustainability strategies is essential for the longevity and equality of the schemes.

Mandi agreed and commented that companies are making sustainability claims and expecting the farms to carry them out, despite the majority of emissions not even coming from the farm level of the supply chain. All of the responsibility cannot be placed solely on the farmer, especially when the vast majority of coffee farmers are living below the poverty line, pointed out Frank. For impactful sustainability practices to be implemented at origin, there needs to be a restructuring on how so much of our coffee is sourced to ensure security of farmer livelihoods.

This perspective of looking more holistically at the coffee supply chain was concurred by Sarah, who argued that we cannot just use technology as the solution, it can only delay or shift problems. She used the example of the development of bio-plastic; while a valuable innovation and substantially improved upon petroleum-based plastic, according to a study by University College London, if we were to replace all plastic we currently use with bio-plastic, in order to meet this demand there wouldn’t be enough land left to grow food. A longer term solution needs to be found. And this is the same with the coffee supply chain.

Frank asserted that we need to face up to the issues of the coffee supply chain and ask the uncomfortable questions if sustainable and long-lasting progress can be made to save the coffee industry for future generations.

Colombini Srl

ANGEL, Giant Inside.

As per our industrial grinders, ANGEL is a high-tech product, equipped with discs in tungsten carbide (hardness: 1300 Vickers) and very high precision adjustment with resolution of two microns and digital display of discs position; due to its solidity and high precision, it can produce batches of ground coffee in continuous cycle, with a capacity of 90-120 kg/h. The duration of the discs is in the order of 40-80 tonnes, depending on the fineness of the ground coffee.

ANGEL can also grind Turkish coffee, with cardamom too; in this case, the capacity is around 50 Kg/h.

It is useful in laboratories to repeat very similar results of our industrial grinders.

All the ANGELs are equipped with a cooling system by ventilation.

Seven different versions can be provided and the prices are all similar. The main difference is the power supply as the 220 volt single-phase version is also equipped with a variable speed drive.

The .LAB and .ST versions are equipped with a manual device that ensures, by means of a simple hand gesture, that the product exhaust duct remains cleaned inside every time a ground coffee package is filled.

The RTV.special and the RT.special are equipped with an automatic cleaning system for the exhaust duct, very helpful when working in a continuous cycle for several minutes/hours.

Goglio Spa

Goglio’s innovative solutions for coffee presented at Host 2023

Goglio is a globally leading group in flexible packaging which designs and develops complete packaging systems providing laminates, valves and capsules, packaging lines and advanced services. Goglio has always been at the forefront of the coffee sector and will present some of the latest innovations for this sector at the Host fair in Milan at Pavillion 18, Booths F52 – F58 G51 – G57.

The Group’s solutions, which introduced the one-way degassing valve back in the late 1960s and today produces more than one billion units a year, now includes a wide range of coffee packaging systems to meet a variety of needs: from packages for coffee beans or ground coffee, characterised by high-barrier laminates which allow the most hermetic guarantee, to the first in the world capsule with degassing valve, which allows the outflow of gases naturally released by coffee, while at the same time preventing oxygen from entering.

Thanks to this innovative technology, roasted coffee can be packaged immediately, without having to wait for the degassing process to be completed. The capsule also stands out for its exceptional brewing quality, achieved through self-perforating lids that guarantee perfect compatibility with coffee machines. As a testament to Goglio’s focus on sustainability, the capsule is also available in the “100% compostable” (Industrial) version.

Goglio also introduced a line of green packaging for coffee, exclusively composed of mono-material – polyethylene or polypropylene – which provides excellent barrier properties to preserve the product and maintains the same level of machinability as conventional laminates.

Also on display at the fair will be the G14 CK, a reel-start packaging line that is optimal for granular, powder and products in pieces and allows for the packaging of 1kg packs of coffee beans in fully suitable for recycling mono-material packs in 100% polyethylene. The line also allows the application of Goglio’s one-way degassing valve and is equipped with connection to Goglio’s MIND Industrial Internet of Things remote monitoring system for real-time, 7-day-a-week, 24-hour monitoring of packaging lines. The latest release of Goglio MIND has been presented at the fair, together with the new fres-co SYSTEM®+, which allows direct connection between laminates and the packaging line.

IMA Coffee

The IMA Coffee Hub’s commitment to research into new sustainable projects and technologies is on show at HOSTMilano.

IMA Coffee Hub strives to answer the needs of the global coffee industry and engineer quality solutions to enhance the performance of its customers. To meet the needs of a rapidly evolving market, IMA Coffee Hub covers all aspects of the processing and packaging processes, from consultancy and design to production planning and turnkey solutions.

“The perfect balance of the IMA Coffee Hub will be visible at HOSTMilano. Starting from a classic-style product, the IMA Petroncini TTA60, the strongest roaster ever, up to the most sustainable and flexible solution for coffee roasting: the IMA Petroncini TMR roaster,” said Nicola Panzani, CEO at IMA Petroncini and sales director at IMA Coffee Hub.

“Also on show will be the TMR25 LAB, the perfect scale-down of IMA Petroncini industrial model, meant for lab purposes. TMR25 makes it possible to perform new roasting profiles, testing new blends and transferring the roasting parameters on the industrial roaster to launch the production. That’s possible thanks to Orchestra, the new roasting control applied on TMR models, capable of self-tuning the machine parameters, thus enabling the roasting technologist to achieve constant roasting results over time, especially for products such as pods and capsules,” Panzani said.

The TMR also uses just one burner as a heat generator and after burner to reduce carbon dioxide, NOx and VOC emissions. The heat recirculation allows, on average, 30 to 35 percent energy saving, compared to traditional roasters.

“Thanks to OPENLab, we can analyse new sustainable and innovative materials such as compostable, paper-based, or ultra-thin film, before they are commercially available,” said Alessandro Nobili, head of product and project management at IMA Coffee | Packaging Solutions.

At HOSTMilano, IMA will be presenting the latest projects developed at IMA OPENLab alongside the new SB1 LAB, an extremely compact rotary machine for the filling and sealing of single capsules, and the SR4N, designed for medium production volumes. Every filler from the IMA Coffee portfolio can handle all types of capsules, whatever material they are made of, be it compostable materials, aluminium, or plastic.

Syntegon

Syntegon is very excited to have the PMX packaging machine to bring to the coffee market. The PMX can be used for ground coffee and whole beans and can also accommodate different packaging formats thanks to fast changeover times. A modular concept enables manufacturers to react quickly to fluctuating market requirements and customer needs. Along with its undeniable flexibility, the PMX simultaneously fulfils modern requirements with respect to sustainability and digitalisation. Moreover, the new digital solution Synexio Empower offers cost savings through condition monitoring by optimising energy and material consumption.

With the PMX, different bag variants and closure elements can be combined along with different sealing options, like full-corner-sealing, which allows for perfect shelf appearance. Therefore, specific customer requirements can be realised, while also achieving efficient output. For example: the PMX can pack up to 65 packages of 500 grams of whole coffee beans per minute. The machine can accommodate an output of up to 100 packages per minute through its double tube version. During the packaging process, if the bag cross-section format is changed, the machine will be ready for use again after just 30 minutes. It is therefore suitable for small, medium, and large packaging formats.

The PMX produces coffee bags with package weights between 200 and 1200 grams, both with upright and downfolded top parts. The bags are resealable via tin tie, labels, or adhesive tape. If required, manufacturers can use an innovative spout closure through which the coffee beans are emptied out at the packaging side – a convenient feature, especially for end users. This ‘neutrafill’ process, in which the coffee is gas-flushed before and during the packaging process, ensures aroma protection.

Syntegon Technology is a leading global process and packaging technology provider. The company, headquartered in Waiblingen, Germany has been offering complete solutions for the pharmaceutical and food industries for over 50 years. The portfolio of intelligent and sustainable technologies includes stand-alone machines, along with complete systems and services. In the food industry, the portfolio includes process technology for confectionery, as well as packaging solutions for dry foods, frozen foods, bakery items, and dairy products.

Teepack Gmbh

Tradition, improved upon!

In the tea business, Constantas are famous machines, providing their owners with a lot of prestige and profit. Now, the new interpretation successfully continues this legacy by using a simple formula: German reliability with global flexibility.

The new version keeps the traditional strengths of the proven Constanta by being a simple and reliable machine, working even under the harshest of conditions. A lot of them are still performing satisfactorily, even after more than 60 years of service. These strengths seem to have hit a mark since its first delivery in 1949, with over 2,500 machines sold all over the world. This is a tradition worth keeping, so we continue to completely design and build our machines at our headquarter in Germany.

Now, it was time to improve upon these strengths and to make the machine ready for the 21st century and the modern customer. We therefore equipped the new Constanta with modern knotting technology, a faulty bag ejection, and a hygienic design.

However, most important is the addition of one more feature: the ability to be configured into over 1,000 variants. Two speed versions, two bag sizes, various removal options and all current envelope types can be combined freely to exactly meet the customer’s requirements.

This modularity is unique in the market and provides the customer with the necessary flexibility to be successful in the fast-changing world of today.

We are happy to report that these new capabilities are already appreciated by the market. Our trusted customers are happy with the new interpretation of this proven concept. And new customers all over the world are starting fresh chapters in their development.

I am writing this blog while attending the 12th North American Tea Conference in Miami, Florida, which is taking place for the first time in the United States since 2019 (due to the Covid-19 pandemic). This year’s NATC has been organised by the Tea Association of the USA (the annual event alternates being organised by Tea USA and the Tea and Herbal Association of Canada).

The 2023 Gold Medal Tea Awards and the Sustainability Awards will be announced at the Chairman’s Dinner (T&CTJ will provide a list of winners and a review of the NATC after the event concludes). The Gold Medal Tea Awards celebrate teas from key producing countries, while the Sustainability Awards honour sustainability-focused projects and initiatives taking place at origin. Sustainability is definitely the theme of the week as the results of the second tea sustainability survey – Firsd Tea 2023 Sustainability Perspectives – have been tabulated and the results are now available.

Just a quick reminder, earlier this year, T&CTJ, in partnership with Firsd Tea, the US subsidiary of Zhejiang Tea Group, conducted a follow up to our late 2021/early 2022 tea sustainability survey. [For every completed response, a contribution was donated to 1% for the Planet, an international organisation whose members contribute at least 1% of their annual sales to environmental causes.] The original survey aimed to understand how professionals within tea and related industries (coffee, cocoa, wine) currently view sustainability efforts within the sector and their outlooks for the future. The survey picks up from our last one, exploring the following topics in depth:

 • Progress on sustainability factors
 • Worries about climate change
 • Organic certification
 • Current state and the future

We hope that this study offers insight into how the tea industry sees sustainability and encourages more investigation into opportunities for achieving a more sustainable tea sector.

I will not detail the full survey findings in this space but will touch upon a few. The survey revealed that most respondents now have an improved outlook on progress made in sustainability in the last ten years. They also view present-day efforts more favourably and predict an increased improvement trajectory in the next 10 years.

Furthermore, a majority of respondents in tea and related industries still agree that Organic Certification is the most important standard to consumers (84% in 2022 vs. 88% in 2023). However, the survey finds that now Non-GMO Certification is more important to consumers (58% in 2022 vs.81% in 2023) than Fair Trade (68% in 2022 and 2023).

To access the full report, Firsd Tea 2023 Sustainability Perspectives, click here.

If you have any questions or comments about the 2023 sustainability survey, please do not hesitate to contact me as we (T&CTJ and Firsd Tea) would welcome the feedback.
