UK speciality coffee roaster Pact Coffee has secured its first retail listing with Waitrose. Six lines will roll into most Waitrose stores nationwide from 16 October, including Pact Coffee’s Bourbon Cream Espresso, Fruit & Nut Espresso and Single Estate Microlot Filter.

A dark roast as indulgent as the classic biscuit, Pact Cofffee’s Bourbon Cream Espresso offers creamy and chocolatey flavours. It will be available as ground coffee, wholebean and in pod form.

The Fruit & Nut Espresso will also be available ground and in pod form. It has a fuller body and a more caramelised flavour profile, with hints of milk chocolate, dried fruit and almonds – characteristics that naturally exist in the coffee.

The Single Estate Microlot Filter will be available as ground coffee only.

All the lines are 100% specialty grade and ethically sourced directly from farmers. The Single Estate Microlot Filter has been sourced directly from Kibirizi Washing Station – a collective of 1,130 farmers that each have less than a hectare of land, on average. It’s common for each farmer to tend to the coffee trees along with fruit and vegetables on their small farms, and the cooperative supports its members with agricultural training, loans and advances in gender equity.

Paul Turton, CEO of Pact Coffee, said: “We couldn’t be more proud to be making Waitrose our grocery home, as we look to provide more consumers with the opportunity to enjoy the taste of some of the world’s best specialty-grade coffee.

“We’re fully aligned with Waitrose in that we’re constantly searching for the highest quality possible, whilst at the same time prioritising recognition and remuneration of the producer.

“Most exciting of all, every bean sold will make a huge difference to the lives of farmers and their families at its origin. Our coffee has the potential to be a tool for significant economic change, and we’re thrilled to have Waitrose on board with our mission and vision.”

The listing follows a spate of exciting developments for Pact Coffee. Last year, its Surrey roastery became carbon-neutral and the company achieved B Corp status. It also paid 76% above the 2022 Fairtrade base price. More recently, the roaster received awards for six of its products.

The Bourbon Cream Espresso and Fruit & Nut Espresso will be on sale with an RRP of GBP £6.95 per 200g bag (ground and wholebean) or 14 x Nespresso Compatible Pods. The Single Estate Microlot Filter will be available for £7.50 RRP.

A promotional offer of 20% off all lines will be running from 16 October to 28 November 2023.

UK supermarket brand Tesco continues to focus on kombucha as a high-growth category by listing kombucha cans from Remedy in its ‘Meal Deal’ in more than 220 stores nationwide.

Remedy’s  Raspberry Lemonade and Wild Berry Kombucha flavours will be added to Tesco’s Meal Deal offer from late May, in response to increased customer demand for healthier food and drink options. This move comes in advance of HFSS regulations targeting products high in fat, sugar or salt, with Remedy’s formulation being both sugar-free and light and refreshing, making kombucha accessible to a mainstream shopper.

The UK kombucha grocery market, worth £14.3 million and growing at 28% year-on-year, is one of the most exciting categories in soft drinks. Remedy is the fastest growing major brand in this category, growing at over 60% year on year and accounting for 64% of total category growth over the past six months1. Remedy’s range of sparkling, live-cultured drinks are all naturally free from sugar and artificial sweeteners, and use a traditional, long-aged brewing process.

Recent research carried out by Remedy demonstrates that 76% of grocery shoppers are looking to reduce or avoid sugar in their diet, making Remedy Kombucha compelling as a simple swap. The latest flavour from Remedy, Remedy Kombucha Wild Berry, which launched exclusively into Tesco earlier this year, will be included within the Meal Deal together with Remedy Kombucha Raspberry Lemonade (both in 250ml can format). Other flavours sold within Tesco include Remedy Kombucha Ginger Lemon and Remedy Kombucha Mango Passion, both available in a multipack (4 x 330ml cans).

Anna Dominey, UK general manager at Remedy Drinks UK, said: “Consumers are actively seeking out great-tasting drinks and easy swaps to reduce their sugar intake, and our research demonstrates that they expect retailers to do their part to support them in making healthier choices. We’re thrilled to see Tesco responding to this by providing Remedy – a drink which is clearly appealing to their customers – with increased prominence and visibility in store.

“By including Remedy in their meal deal, Tesco is offering shoppers a natural alternative to high sugar or artificially sweetened drinks – with no compromise thanks to Remedy’s light and refreshing taste.”

As well as this move into front-of-store, Tesco recently increased its distribution of Remedy multipacks in the soft drinks aisle by >190%. This is not the only recent success story for Remedy, a brand created on a kitchen counter by founders Emmet and Sarah Condon as they sought to create a healthier drink option for their family: Remedy has also seen its distribution and range increased within Morrisons, Ocado and Holland & Barrett. Morrisons is adding Remedy Kombucha Mango Passion (700ml bottle) to its existing Remedy range; while Holland & Barrett will also extend its 700ml bottle range to include SEVEN flavour variants (both retailers also stock Remedy variants in wider can format). Additionally, Ocado is adding two further Remedy multipack variants in Wild Berry and Mango Passion flavours.

Anna added: “Remedy is driving growth in the kombucha category by increasing the healthy drinks options available for consumers without compromising on taste. We are grateful to our retail partners for their support in making kombucha more accessible to all.”

Fresh Thyme Market, a natural food marketplace known for fresh and healthy food, is now offering Lucky Jack Coffee Nitro Cold Brew Oatmilk Lattes in 70 stores in the East and MidWest.

As an independent sustainable coffee company focused on organic small batch and hand-crafted coffee, Lucky Jack’s mission is aligned with Fresh Thyme Market’s focus on offering organic and natural products with no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

Already known for ready-to-drink cold brews and multi-serve cold brew concentrates, Lucky Jack expanded its product offering this spring to include Nitro Cold Brew Lattes with oat milk, the company’s first canned offering. Certified organic, gluten-free, nut-free, and kosher, the new Lucky Jack lattes combine functional coffee, plant-based ingredients, and organic, small batch-roasted beans with a blend of smooth oat milk.

Fresh Thyme Market has stocked two flavours: Mocha, a latte with rich flavour notes, and Golden Milk + Turmeric, which includes a blend of cinnamon and turmeric, two nutritional supplements that offer major benefits thanks to powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

“We want to give consumers an organic, ready-to-drink nitro cold brew that they can count on to deliver a jolt of caffeine and healthy ingredients along with great taste,” says Lucky Jack Coffee VP of Sales Bryan Hogsett. “The lattes are a great drink for Fresh Thyme Market’s customers who want a beverage to support a healthier lifestyle with a dairy-free option.”

Each 7.5 fl oz can packs a punch with 130mg of organic caffeine per serving, and just 80 calories or less, no more than 5 grams of sugar. Lucky Jack’s Nitro Cold Brew Lattes don’t need to be refrigerated, making them a shelf-stable drink to take on the go.

Pour over ice or drink straight from the can, the suggested retail price is $3.49 per can or $29.99 for a 12-pack of 7.5oz cans.

KÖE Kombucha – the fruit-forward, organic kombucha in a convenient can – has announced significant expansion to its national distribution footprint. As mainstream consumers call for function like gut health and immunity, low sugar, exceptional taste, and competitive price points in their beverages, KÖE’s availability is extending beyond the natural channel and into more sets with mass appeal. Under new partnership deals, KÖE is available through best-in-class natural, broadline, and DSD distributors, infiltrating convenience, drug, and grocery retailers across the US.

Notable new retail placements include: select 7-Eleven locations (3,000), United Markets, Safeway Mid-Atlantic, Bristol Farms, Natural Grocers, Foodland, Super 1 Foods, RI Jordan Oil Company, Pioneer Petroleum, Royal Farms Convenience Stores, Henderson Oil Company, Clipper Petroleum, B-Kwik, and Re-Fuel. New DSD partners include: Honickman Beverage Group, Admiral Beverage, expanded UNFI coverage, Breakthru Beverage Group (FL), Northeast Sales, Canteen, Lipman Brothers, A.B. Beverage Company, Southwest Distributing, and Grey Eagle.

“KÖE’s positioning and offering is unique – surprisingly delicious, accessible flavors with all of the health benefits of traditional kombucha, but none of the unpleasant vinegar aftertaste. Now a strong base of consumers is catching on. And the best part is they’re not the typical kombucha drinkers – and they’re shopping across a variety of store formats,” said Louisa Lawless, chief strategy officer at Stratus Group’s KÖE Kombucha. “We’re bringing a totally new audience to this category. KÖE is gaining the attention of major beverage distributors as we consistently grow our sales momentum and velocities across channels.”

KÖE has taken an omni-channel approach, experiencing considerable growth in both ecomm and brick-and-mortar sales. According to IRI in the period ending 7.11.21, the US Kombucha Category declined -2%, while KÖE grew an impressive +72%. By channel, KÖE grew +87% in Grocery and +69% in Convenience. In the past four weeks, KÖE also posted +350% gains in Drug. KÖE is also the 2nd largest contributor to overall Kombucha growth in the Drug channel.

In the DTC space, KÖE continues to experience strong sales of 12-packs on Amazon and increased purchases from Instacart, Shipt, and retailer-owned grocery pickup and delivery programs.

Consumer demand has also led to the launch of KÖE’s two new flavours – Watermelon and Tropical – hitting store shelves this month. All of KÖE’s authentically fermented, lightly sparkling flavors are packed with billions of premium, live, probiotics. KÖE is USDA Organic, non-GMO Project Verified, and contains just 35 calories and 8 grams sugar per serving. KÖE’s convenient cans are shelf-stable for 12 months.

Kombucha specialist Remedy has become the first kombucha brand to be stocked in UK Tesco Superstores, with two of its best-selling drinks being rolled out across an initial 327 stores nationwide, as well as online at Tesco.com. Remedy Kombucha is a live cultured, unpasteurised kombucha that is naturally free from sugar, making it a great fit for Tesco which has committed to a 5% year-on-year reduction in sugar across its entire soft drinks range.

Remedy Kombucha will initially be available at Tesco in multipacks (4 x 330ml cans) and in two flavour options – Apple Crisp and Raspberry Lemonade – with an RRP of £5. It will be sold from the soft drinks aisle, enhancing Tesco customers’ choice of healthy drinks, with each can of Remedy containing just nine calories.

Remedy was founded in 2012 by Australian couple Sarah and Emmet Condon, who have gone from brewing kombucha on their kitchen counter at home to producing over 20 million litres of fermented drinks per year. “We started brewing kombucha for our family. We loved how the traditionally fermented drink tasted and also how it made us feel. We looked around and saw so many products on supermarket shelves claiming to be healthy, but they really weren’t. Rather than get frustrated, we saw it as a huge opportunity to make it right,” said co-founder Emmet Condon.

While it’s moved on from the kitchen counter, Remedy is still made the old-school way: in small batches, long-aged brewed for 30 days, raw and unpasteurised. Not only does this brew out all the sugar, but it also means Remedy is full of live cultures (‘good bacteria), with a 330ml can of Remedy containing 330 million live cultures. Remedy Kombucha also contains tea polyphenols, or antioxidants, and organic acids, the same kind produced by our gut bacteria to aid important body processes.

Remedy has enjoyed a meteoric rise in its home market of Australia, one of the most developed markets for kombucha in the world, with Remedy the clear leading brand with over 50% share of the kombucha category. A Remedy drink is reportedly sold in Australian supermarkets every three seconds. Remedy arrived in the UK in 2018 and has rapidly grown to be one of the leading brands here, stocked in Marks & Spencer, Holland & Barrett, Morrisons, Boots, Booths and Amazon. Remedy’s successful international expansion has also seen it launch into the US, Canada, Ireland, Singapore and the Philippines.

The kombucha market worldwide is growing rapidly, with the value expected to surpass USD 5 billion by 2025. In Europe, kombucha was worth nearly £180 million in 2019 and is expected to reach roughly £580 million by 2025, driven by increasing awareness of the dangers of sugary drinks and a general increased demand for functional beverages.

Emmet continued: “Receiving the backing of the UK’s largest supermarket chain marks a monumental occasion for Remedy and is something that we could never have anticipated when we first started brewing kombucha at home for our family and friends. We like to think that it also says a lot about the exceptional quality and taste of our products!

“We are thrilled that our partnership with Tesco expands the healthy drinks choices currently available to UK customers, and we remain committed to continuing to drive and pioneer the fermented drinks category, shaking up the fizzy drinks industry worldwide for good.”
